Why Vinyl ?

I have already been chatting about this with solo and a couple of others . Again this isnt definite but here are my arguments in favor of vinyl for the first release :

I think vinyl (though downloads and cd etc are also possible) for several reasons. Music sales have plummeted - everybody downloads music they want now for free - with , apparently, one exception - vinyl ! whos sales are actually enjoying a renaissance :

vinyl has a better signal to noise ratio not in terms of sound quality but in that its very easy to publish online in mp3 format, very slightly harder to produce a CD and damn difficult to produce vinyl. So many DJs and radio shows that we might want to appeal to will rarely get vinyl posted to them and even rarer if it is a sonic art/electroacoustic /strange music show so much more likely to attract there attention than just another cd through the post or worse - one of million emails. Thirdly vinyl is often these days considered an "objet d'art" in its own right - especially if the packaging is beautiful or striking etc etc Finally its not so easy to copy vinyl. Of course this does not preclude releasing in another format as well - maybe a bit later.

I'm completely in agreement over the medium of vinyl. In the current music industry climate, it's the only viable option if we want anyone to take this seriously.

Wow, I can't believe I never even considered the idea you are presenting. I'm all for the vinyl. It's authentic and, in the simplest of contexts, remains true to what each artist contributing to it is conveying for their music, represented at face value, in a more extreme way of looking at the ambitions of an artist. Vinyl is a great start to a true community in music. The only question is the cost of this all. Money is scarce.

Hmmm, very interesting perspectives on vinyl. I would be curious to actually do the ritual of playing one of my songs (and ya'lls) on a turntable...how nostalgic that would be.

I love the permanence of vinyl. You won't be able to play most CDs after a decade or two, but a record can remain playable for millennia if cared for.

Yes, I'm all for vinyl; it has this unique quality to it. Btw, will the tracks be mastered? And do you need the tracks to be mixed down properly so that the mastering engineer can work with them or do you plan to put them out as is?

This has all got to be discussed Kimanthir - but yes the tracks will definately need to be mastered and mixed down properly - I have already listened to most of these tracks on proffesional full range monitors and most of them are already pretty well produced and of releasable sound quality . At least two of us have mastering experience - I dont know about vinyl mastering - mastering for vinyl is a whole different kettle of fish and as I understand it the vinyl press do the actual technical side of the mastering that gets the bass right so the needle doesnt jump all over the place etc. What we really need to do is find a vinyl press that does a really good job. Theres nothing worse than sending of a well produced piece of music to get it back on vinyl sounding like its been done in a tin can !
If anyone has a recently pressed vinyl of excellant quality in an alternative genre - let us know and we can see how much they charge.
